Herbal Teas
Herbal teas or tisanes are not only natural and often therapeutic, but are also a good way to up your daily water intake.  For those with a sweet tooth, honey, not sugar, goes best with the taste of herbal teas.  Tou need only use 2 or 3 leaves or flowers per cup of water.  Use boiling water, and allow the tisane to steep for 5 minutes before drinking.  To see what products are available for online purchase, please visit my eBay boutique by clicking on the logo.

Sage

A cup of sage tea, taken after a meal, is said to aid digestion.  It is famously good for night sweats and apparently invaluable during the menopause.  It should not, however, be taken in large quantities, and as with all herbal remedies, you should always seek medical advice and avoid drinking to excess!

Lemon Verbena

Lemon verbena is very lemony, with pretty narrow leaves that make a lovely pale-green tea.  It's the one for drinking before going to bed and will help send you to sleep...

Chamomile

Chamomile tea has a wealth of uses. It calms the nerves and is often used as a mild sedative. While not as strong as prescription sleeping pills, chamomile soothes the nervous system and relaxes the user.   Chamomile will also soothe digestive pain and stomach problems, eases symptoms of the common cold and flu and is also said to relieve menstrual cramps.

Note that pregnant women should not drink chamomile tea. In large doses it harms the fetus and causes miscarriage. Anyone allergic to chamomile tea should also avoid it and its extracts.

Lemon Balm

Despite its similarity in taste to Lemon Verbena, lemon balm has the opposite effect to verbena. It relieves tiredness and is a useful morning-after pick-me-up. It's also good for tension and headaches, and studies have shown that it helps restore memory.

Peppermint

Peppermint tea is a lively and refreshing drink reputed to aid digestion.  The drink is naturally caffeine free, making it a wonderful alternative to tea and coffee.  Spearmint is one up from peppermint, perhaps a bit stronger.   Both are excellent for indigestion and colds.
