Cosmetic Herbs
There are many simple herbal preparations that you can use to tone, clean and moisturise your skin.  Whereas it's very easy to buy branded products, home-made ones are somehow more luxurious, and of course making your own helps you to avoid any known irritants and allergens.  To see what products are available for online purchase, please visit my eBay boutique by clicking on the logo.

Chamomile Face-Mask

A very simple face mask can be made from chamomile flowers, honey and bran.  It softens the skin and leaves it feeling beautifully smooth and refreshed.

Ingredients
1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons bran

Make an infusion of the chamomile flowers with the boiling water.  Allow to stand for 30 minutes then strain.  Warm the honey in a pan and mix in the bran and 1/3 of the cup of chamomile water.  Spread it on your face, leave for 10 minutes then wash off.

Tansy-leaf Skin Freshener

Splash this freshener, which has a strong tansy fragrance, onto your skin straight from the fridge.

Ingredients
2 tablespoons dry tansy leaves
1 cup water
1 cup milk

Place all ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to the boil.  Simmer for 15 minutes then leave to cool.  Strain the liquid into a clean container and refrigerate.

Sage Hair Rinse

There are a number of herbs you can use to make fragrant hair rinses.  Shampoo your hair first, then rince through with the infusion.  Always use an old towel to dry your hair afterwards: sage, in particular, will stain the towel!  A sage rinse will darken grey hair; a chamomile rinse will brighten fair hair.

Ingredients

5 cups water

1 cup sage leaves (or chamomile flowers)

Place the water and sage leaves in a saucepan and bring the mixture to the boil.  Simmer for 15 minutes and let it cool.  The sage rinse should stand for several hours before using.  Strain into a bottle, ready for use.
